A Story of Resilience: Stephen’s Journey with Ayurveda

Stephen was once trapped in a body that refused to listen. Diagnosed with Stage 4 Parkinson’s, his days were filled with relentless tremors, sleepless nights, and the frustration of watching his own hands betray him. Writing, once second nature, became an increasingly difficult task. His muscles remained under constant tension, while the challenges of living with Parkinson’s became a growing part of his everyday life.

Looking for additional support alongside his existing medical care, Stephen found his way to ASHAexperience. This marked the beginning of his personal journey with Ayurveda. Under the compassionate guidance of Dr. Neela Sheth, his Ayurvedic assessment looked at his health and wellbeing through the traditional Ayurvedic understanding of balance. His personalised programme included carefully selected Ayurvedic preparations, gentle therapies, and nutritional guidance to support his overall wellbeing.

A personalised Ayurvedic Panchakarma programme in India was arranged for him, offering an immersive experience of Ayurveda where time-honoured practices were brought together to support his body, mind, and overall wellbeing. Understanding the challenges he was facing, I accompanied him on this journey. It was an experience that became deeply personal, emotional, and profoundly human.

During his time in India, Stephen personally experienced changes that felt significant to him. He reported that his tremors became less pronounced, his sleep improved, and he experienced greater clarity and overall wellbeing. Perhaps most beautifully, he also felt that the experience reached beyond the physical, bringing a renewed sense of connection to his relationships with his wife and children.

Stephen’s story is his own deeply personal experience, and it reflects why we believe there is value in exploring how Ayurveda may support people living with Parkinson’s alongside their ongoing neurological care.

An Invitation to Reimagine Parkinson’s Care

At ASHAexperience, we believe that caring for our wellbeing means looking at the whole person, including the body, mind, daily life, and emotional wellbeing.

This is why we are honoured to collaborate with Alex Reed‘s organisation, the European Parkinson Therapy Centre, to host an enlightening webinar on April 11, 2025, in recognition of World Parkinson’s Day.

How can traditional Eastern medical practices complement the care and support available to people living with Parkinson’s? This is the question we seek to explore.

Living with Parkinson’s can bring many changes and uncertainties. Ayurveda offers a complementary perspective that considers the person as a whole. In this exclusive webinar, we will explore how this ancient system of medicine understands Parkinson’s, traditionally known in Ayurveda as Kampavata, through the lens of individual balance and overall wellbeing.

What You Will Learn

Led by Dr. Neela Sheth, Ayurvedic Doctor at ASHAexperience based in Switzerland, this session will explore:

  • How Ayurveda understands Parkinson’s, traditionally known as Kampavata, through the lens of Ayurvedic principles and individual balance
  • How traditional Ayurvedic practices, herbal preparations, and Panchakarma may form part of a personalised approach to overall wellbeing
  • The role of daily lifestyle and nutritional practices in supporting mobility, digestion, sleep, strength, and emotional wellbeing
  • How an integrative Ayurvedic approach may support symptom management, daily functioning, and overall quality of life alongside ongoing neurological care

How people living with Parkinson’s can explore and experience Ayurveda in Italy or Berlin.

Why Does This Matter Now?

Living with Parkinson’s often requires ongoing care and support that extends into many areas of daily life. Alongside neurological treatment, people may also look for ways to support their mobility, digestion, sleep, emotional wellbeing, strength, and overall quality of life.

This is where integrative care can offer a wider perspective. Through our collaboration with Alex Reed and the European Parkinson Therapy Centre, we explore how an integrative Ayurvedic approach may support symptom management, daily functioning, and overall quality of life alongside ongoing neurological care. Like us, Alex’s organisation embraces a holistic approach that considers medicine, movement, lifestyle, and psychology, a philosophy that shares common ground with Ayurveda’s whole-person perspective.

Together, we are exploring a more integrative path, where conventional neurological care and complementary wellbeing approaches can exist alongside one another, with the individual’s needs and quality of life at the centre.
